The vocabulary and picture appear separately, with the written word on one side of the flashcard and the picture on the other. This arrangement forces students to remember the word in English. When introducing the vocabulary for the first time, consider the following steps:
1. The teacher holds up the picture and says the word. 2. The class repeats after the teacher, saying the word aloud in unison. 3. The teacher flips the card to show the spelling of the word. He/She says it again. 4. The class says the word aloud in unison. 5. The teacher and students go through the deck of flashcards twice to promote memorization.
Activity #1: Students work in pairs and receive one deck of cards. Student A draws a card, shows the picture to student B, who then says the word aloud. If incorrect, student A says the word for his/her partner to repeat. Continue through the deck.
Activity #2: Students get into groups of three or four, then select one person to conduct the activity (student A). The other students (B, C, and D) are the participants. Student A draws a card and shows the picture. The others must slap the table as quickly as possible. The first to do so says the word aloud, and receives a point if correct. If incorrect, he/she loses a point. Student A also then says the word aloud for everyone, and returns the card to the deck. Continue through all the cards at least once. The student with the most points wins.
