Spelling and Phonics FLASHCARDS

This set of flashcards lacks pictures. Classes use the cards to focus on spelling, as well as on phonics. Without pictures that link the word with the image, students look to the letters and sounds they produce. For students whose written language doesn't use Roman letters, this can be of great benefit. However, the teacher may opt to use these cards to introduce new words, much as he/she would with other flashcard sets with pictures, in order to save printer ink.

Activity #1: The teacher holds up the flashcard and says the word aloud. Students repeat in unison, and then spell the word orally as a group. Weaker students benefit from seeing, saying, and spelling the word aloud, and without the pressure of performance. (Students may become discouraged or embarrassed when prompted individually for the spelling of a word but cannot give the correct answer.) The class continues through the deck twice. Next, students get into pairs and receive one deck of cards. Student A draws a card, and says the word without showing the card to his/her partner. Student B spells the word. Students alternate roles through the deck.

Activity #2: Students get into pairs and receive several cards. The cards should be distributed with the words face down. Student A sits directly behind student B. He/She draws a card, then spells the word with his/her finger on the back of student B. Student B guesses the word when finished. Switch roles with the next card and continue through the deck.
